"Casey at Bat" by Ernest Thayer

For the baseball lovers, "Casey at Bat" by Ernest Thayer is a fun poem to read. It's a poem about a baseball player, Casey, who is being cheered on by the fans in the stadium. The fans waited in anxious anticipation for each player to successfully get on base so that Casey could bring them home. With the score down by two, Casey not only had to bring his two fellow players home but himself to win the game. Casey, as well as the fans, had complete confidence that he would be able to put the bat to the ball and get everyone to home plate safely. Casey's confidence was a little misplaced because with two strikes  already on him, he swung on the third pitch and STRUCK OUT!!!! Ouch!!! That has got to hurt.

This was a fun poem to read. Being a fan of baseball, I expected Casey to bust the baseball out of the ballpark resulting in his team winning. I liked how Ernest Thayer used rhyming to keep the poem flowing. For example: "to the wonderment of all....... tore the cover off the ball." Ernest Thayer also used personification when saying that the yells of the fans "pounded on the mountain" and "the score stood four to two." There was two onomatopoeias such as "whack" and "roar" but did I expect a lot more since it was a poem about baseball.

  1. "Casey at the Bat" looks like a great book to use in the classroom. It's hard to get students to pay attention to a story, if they are not interested in it. I think students would be interested in this baseball based book. Some students would have good back ground knowledge about baseball, which would help them to connect better to this book. This book would be good way to introduce the different aspects of poetry. It has a couple different aspects in it but not a lot where students would get overwhelmed. Good job with the summary and the aspects of poetry in this book.

  2. "Casey at the Bat" is a book that I have read before and the kids loved it. This book is a good way to show the students that poetry can be fun and interesting but having similar interest that they are interested in such as baseball and many other topics. This book is good at showing different elements of poetry and the elements are easily recognizable so the students could find and point out. The summary and write up of this book was great!- Dianne

  3. I have never read "Casey at the Bat" but I would love to after reading your post. I am a sports fan and I always enjoy reading stories about sports. I think this poem would be great to use in a classroom. Most kids love sports and this would be easy to grab their attention. It sounds like this poem not only is about baseball but also can teach life lessons as well. Also, this book seems to have many great elements of poetry which is great when teaching poetry in the classroom. I really enjoyed reading this blog and can't wait to read "Casey at the Bat".
